Jeremy Beecham, Baron Beecham

Jeremy Hugh Beecham, Baron Beecham, Kt, DL ( born November 17 1944) is a British Labour Party politician and a figure in local politics. He was Chairman (Leader ) of the Newcastle City Council and the first Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Local Government Association. From October 2005 to September 2006 he was chairman ( Chairman ) of the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party.

Life and career

Beecham attended the Royal Grammar School in Newcastle upon Tyne from 1962 to 1965, the University College, University of Oxford, where he attained a degree with First Class Honours.

From 1968 to 2002 he was a partner at Beecham Peacock. Since 2002 he has been there Consultant (Consultant ). He was admitted as a Solicitor in 1968. In 1959, he joined the Labour Party and was elected Councillor for Benwell and Newcastle upon Tyne City in 1967. Beecham appeared unsuccessful in the constituency of Tynemouth in the general election in 1970. From 1973 to 1977 he chaired the Social Services Committee of the council before and was Chairman (Leader) from 1977 to 1994, and Chairman ( Chair ) of Finance Committee at 1979 until 1984. From 1977 to 1994 he was Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Policy and Resources Committee. From 1985 to 1997 he was a member of the Development Committee.

In the North Development Company Ltd. Beecham was from 1986 to 1991 director. From 1983 to 1987, Beecham Commissioner of English Heritage. In 1985 he became a member of the Theatre Royal Trust. From 1987 to 1989 he joined the Supervisory Board ( Council) to the Neighbourhood Energy Association and since 1988 the President's Committee Business in the Community. 1991 Beecham Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Association of Metropolitan Authorities ( AMA). When the AMA joined forces on 1 April 1997 with the Association of District Councils and the Association of County Councils for Local Government Association ( LGA), he became the first chairman ( Chairman ) of the LGA and remained so until 2004, then he became deputy Chairman ( Vice-Chairman ). He is also Chairman of the LGA Labour Group and President of the British Urban Regeneration Association. Beecham was a member of various boards and committees in Newcastle and North East England and advised the government.

From 1971 to 1983 he was a member of the NEC Local & Regional Government Sub - Committee. Since 1992, he serves on the Policy Committee join. From 1992 to 1998 he was a member of the Domestic Intelligence and Policy Committee. He was a member of the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party since 1998 and was its Chairman ( Chairman ) 2005-2006, and Deputy Chairman ( Vice-Chairman level) from 2004 until 2005.

In 1994 he became Deputy Lieutenant of the county of Tyne and Wear and represents Benwell and Scotswood continue in the City Council. Since 1989, Beecham is a member of the Supervisory Board ( Council) of the charity organization Common Purpose.

He was 1995 President of Age Concern Newcastle, and in 1996 BURA. Beecham is since 1997 President of the Newcastle Choral Society. He is since 1999 member of the Trusteeship Council ( trustee ) of the Tyneside Cinema. Since 2007 he is member of the Supervisory Board (Board ) of the New Israel Fund, and since 2009 its Vice-Chairman ( Vice-Chairman ).

Since 2000, Beecham member of the NHS Modernisation Board and the Advisory Board since 2006 ( Intelligence Advisory Board ) of the Harold Hartog School of Government at Tel Aviv University.

Membership in the House of Lords

Beecham was appointed on 20 July 2010 on the Life peer as Baron Beecham, of Benwell and Newcastle upon Tyne in the county of Tyne and Wear. His official introduction to the House of Lords took place on July 27, 2010 with the support of John Walton, Baron Walton of Detchant and Jack Cunningham. His inaugural address was delivered on 5 October 2010. Beecham is regularly present at meeting days.

Work in the public

When a local conference in January 2011, he called for an increase in the allowances of Councillors. This has been criticized by the Conservatives. In a report drawn up for the Guardian article, he sat down critically with the case brought by the government Localism Bill. In January 2012, he called for additions to the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Bill ( LASPO ). In view of the discussed changes in the electoral law, he spoke out against the introduction of a voluntary voter registration.

Honors

Beecham was named in the 1994 Birthday Honours Knight Bachelor in 1995 and Freeman of the City of Newcastle. He was an Honorary Fellow of Newcastle -upon- Tyne Polytechnic in 1989. From the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in 1992 with a Doctor of Civil Law ( Hon DCL).
