The University of Tel Aviv (Hebrew אוניברסיטת תל אביב, Arabic جامعة تل أبيب ) is one of Israel's largest universities. Approximately 29,000 high students study at the university.

Structure

The University consists of nine faculties, which are divided into 90 institutes.

History

The forerunners of the university were several smaller colleges and institutes. Designated here are the College of Law and Economics, which was founded in 1935 and as a universal educational establishment already the Faculties of Law, economics, management and policy, business administration, tax law included, which was built in 1931 biological- educational Institute and the Institute for Judaism.

The first two were the first institutions of higher education in Tel Aviv at all. 1955 opened the Trobovich building ( also called the " Red House " ), which was used as a permanent site for the College of Law and Economics and the beginning of the academic terrain in the Tel Aviv district of Ramat Aviv was formed.

On the basis of this district there was originally the Arab village of al - Shaykh Muannes (Arabic: الشيخ مؤنس ), whose inhabitants due to the Arab-Israeli war of 1948 fled. Today's campus is located in large part to the country of the former village. Parts of the country were doing the college bought legally, but others do not. The only surviving house of the village part on the university campus now houses the clubhouse of the University.

In order to now the different colleges and institutes, various initiatives have been brought together in the 1950s started. One of those of the former Tel Aviv Mayor Chaim Levanon was launched and could ultimately prevail. Thus, the various institutions were united in 1956 and announced the establishment of the University on June 6th of the same year. Professor Israel Efrat became the first director of the University. 1960 first parts were recognized by the high educational committee in Israel, and later gained more and more faculties academic recognition.

In 1978, Beit Hatefutsot was on the grounds of the University - the Diaspora Museum opened, named after the founder and longtime president of the World Jewish Congress. In Germany, Tel Aviv University cooperates with the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main. Both cities are connected by a long-standing partnership.
