Johan Skytte Prize in Political Science
The Skytteanische Professor of politics and rhetoric (Swedish Skytteanska professorships i statskunskap och vältalighet ) is a time-honored professor of political science in Sweden.
Foundation
The professorship was in 1622 by the Baron and Johan Skytte Imperial Council ( 1577-1645 ) established at the University of Uppsala. It is probably the oldest professor of political science in the world. The holders of the Chair include in the history of Sweden to the most respected political scientists in the country.
For the cost of the chair Skytte donated belongings of the land, including a manor house in the center of Uppsala, the so-called Skytteanum. It still serves as a professor apartment.
Occupation
The final decision for the professorship is made by the descendants of Johan Skyttes. Today, it is de facto exercised by a consistory. According to a decree by King Gustav II Adolf the holder of the professorship will receive full equality with all other professors.
Skytteanischer Price
Besides giving a prize committee at Uppsala University since 1995 annually on 30 November the worth 500,000 Swedish crowns Skytteanska priset. He is one of the most prestigious awards in political science worldwide. Chairman of the Prize Committee is ex officio the owner of Skytteanischen professorship.
