One cover from October 1, 1692 bears witness to his activities as court organist at the former court church of St. Andrew. This office he held until in 1697. He has been called during his organist activity in April 1696 on the occasion of his first opera Giocasta as Vice-Kapellmeister. This track he led until 1702 From 1703 he appears as Kapellmeister. ; as his representative Luigi Carlo Pietragrua is occupied. In addition, poachers has been appointed Hofkammerrat 1699 and 1704 or 1705, knighted by his electors, the Palatinate - Neuburg Johann Wilhelm. From his marriage with Mary Dahmen nine children were born.

Poachers probably George Frideric Handel met during his visits at the court in Düsseldorf in 1710 and 1711. The poachers with befriended Georg Andreas Kraft (1660-1726) wrote several operas Poacher's ballet music. A high point in life poacher was crowned emperor Charles VI. to Frankfurt am Main in 1711. worked here the composer with the entire 53 -member Düsseldorf court orchestra with. After the death of the Elector Johann Wilhelm on June 8, 1716 Court Orchestra by his brother, the new Elector Karl Philipp, who had previously resided in Innsbruck was first dissolved. For an early reinstatement of a large part of the musicians he joined in 1718 the Düsseldorf Court Chapel with the court orchestra led by Jacob Greber Innsbruck in Heidelberg and moved his residence to Mannheim in 1720.

Poacher wrote eleven operas, most of which were premiered in Dusseldorf, two oratorios, cantatas, and some four sacred works. In the history of music poacher is mentioned in connection with Johann Sebastian Bach because Bach a Missa brevis ( Kyrie and Gloria in G minor ) was written off by poachers who has been a long time mistaken for a work by Bach. A study by Christoph Wolff poacher fair has held similarities between this and the Kyrie from Bach's B Minor Mass. Konrad Küster has argued, however, Wolff's conjecture that Bach is oriented to poachers, if devoid of distinctive differences based. In the period of the supremacy of French and Italians gained poachers outstanding importance as a German musician. Apart from Jacob Greber he was the first court music of the orchestra, which developed the famous orchestra of the Mannheim school later.
