John Arnot, Jr.

John Arnot, Jr. ( born March 11, 1831 in Elmira, New York, † November 20, 1886 ) was an American politician. Between 1883 and 1886 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Arnot attended private schools in his homeland. He wrote later at Yale College a, left this institution but without a degree. After his father's death he went into the banking industry in Elmira. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Democratic Party launched a political career. Between 1859 and 1864 he was mayor of Elmira. During the Civil War as a major in Elmira Arnot was paymaster of the Union troops stationed there. After Elmira was officially declared a town, he was elected in 1864, 1870 and 1874 to the local mayor.

In the congressional elections of 1882 Arnot in 29 electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Republican David P. Richardson on March 4, 1883. After a re-election in the 28th district of his state he could exercise his mandate until his death on 20 November 1886.
