John Ericsson National Memorial

The John Ericsson National Memorial at Ohio Drive and Independence Avenue in Southwest Washington, DC located, the man is dedicated, who revolutionized by the use of propellers naval history. The Swedish engineer John Ericsson has also designed the USS Monitor, which secured the supremacy of the Union's Civil War Navy.

The National Memorial was approved by Congress on August 31, 1916, and placed on 29 May 1926 by President Calvin Coolidge and Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden. The Congress provided $ 35,000 for the construction of the monument ready and American citizens, mostly Scandinavian descent, gathered 25,000 more U.S. dollars. The monument was built from September 1926 to April 1927, near the Lincoln Memorial and is 6.10 meters high.

The sculpture by James Earle Fraser shows a seated Ericsson (2 meters high) and three standing figures, which stand for " adventure ", " work", and "vision". The National Memorial is administered by the National Mall and Memorial Parks.
