John Hawkes (tennis)

John "Jack" Baily Hawkes ( born June 7, 1899 in Geelong, † 31 May 1990) was an Australian tennis player.

Hawkes was the most successful Australian tennis player of the 1920s. In 1926 he won the Australian Tennis Championships. In the final he defeated his compatriot Jim Willard in three sets (6:1, 6:3, 6:1). A year later, he lost the final against Gerald Patterson in five sets. In the doubles competition he won with his partner Gerald Patterson against James Anderson and Pat O'Hara Wood 6:1, 6:4, 6:2 in 1926 and 1927 against Pat O'Hara Wood and Ian McInness 8:6, 6: 2, 6-1. In 1930 he reached the final with Tim Fitchett, lost with him but against the previous year's winner Jack Crawford and Harry Hopman. The mixed doubles this competition he won with Esna Boyd Robertson 1922, 1926 and 1927. Moreover, the two were at the 1928 finals, but gave up without a fight, so Daphne Akhurst Cozens and Jean Borotra won. The American Tennis Championships 1925, he won with Kathleen McKane Godfree against Ermyntrude Harvey and Vincent Richards 6-2, 6-4 ( after he had failed in her 1923 finale him to Bill Tilden and Molla Mallory ) and 1928 with Helen Wills Moody against Edith Cross and Edgar Moon 6:1, 6:3.
