John II, Count of Soissons

Called John of Nesle, " the stutterer " (le Begue ), ( † 1270/72 ) was (as John II of Soissons ) Count of Soissons, Lord of Amboise and by marriage, Count of Chartres out of the house Nesle. He was the son of Raoul I de Nesle († 1235 ), Count of Soissons, and his second wife, Yolande.

He is not to be confused with his cousin John II of Nesle, Lord of Nesle, Viscount of Bruges.

Life

Johann supported in 1230 the regent Blanche of Castile in the fight against Peter Mauclerc. The following year he came with the heads of church of Soissons, in a dispute over property rights. After he had it captured several prelates, could only print on King Louis IX. and the mediation of the Archbishop of Reims to reach an agreement. 1242 Johann supported the King in the fight against Hugo X of Lusignan and King Henry III. of England.

The King, he accompanied on the Sixth Crusade (1248-1250) to Egypt, where he distinguished himself at the February 8, 1250 in the fight against al - Mansura. During the fight, Johann should have his in-laws cousin, Jean de Joinville called out, that they are still talking about that day in the chambers of their women. In April 1250 he got well into the captivity of the Mamluks, but was soon set free, after which he then traveled back to the homeland.

In 1265 Johann moved to Prince Charles of Anjou to Italy, there to conquer the Kingdom of Sicily. He led together with Guy de Montfort, the escort of Beatrice of Provence to Rome. The following year he fought in the victorious battle of Benevento.

1270 took Johann also in the Seventh Crusade to Tunis in part, where King Louis IX. died. Even John died shortly after his return to the homeland.

Marriage and issue

In his first marriage Johann was married to Marie ( † around 1241 ), the daughter and heiress of Roger de Chimay. Their son was:

  • Johann III. ( † before 1286), Count of Soissons

His second wife was Mathilde d' Amboise ( † 1256), daughter of Sulpice III. d' Amboise and Isabella of Blois. She was on her mother Countess of Chartres.
