John Lennox

John Carson Lennox is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the University of Oxford.

Life

John Lennox was born in Northern Ireland. He studied at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. There he heard, among other things, the last lecture of CS Lewis about the poet John Donne. 1970 Lennox was awarded in Soluble Groups of Cambridge University doctorate for his dissertation entitled Centrality and Permutability. John Lennox then taught for 29 years at the University of Wales in Cardiff mathematics. During this time he spent research periods at the Universities of Würzburg, Freiburg ( as a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation ) and Vienna. In addition, he held in Europe and North America, guest lectures in mathematics and Bible interpretation. In addition to his scientific publication activity he translated the works of Russian mathematician. Today Lennox teaches at the University of Oxford and is particularly concerned with the definition of the relationship of science and religion. On this subject he has become known in the non-university public as an author and speaker.

Positions

In the scientific discussion Lennox has especially engaged by his decidedly Christian point of view. So he turned the public debate with scientists who doubt the existence of God or a divine intervention in the world, or exclude, such as Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens and Michael Shermer. John Lennox represents in a more moderate form of the theory of intelligent design, but referred creationist flows ( as a result of strict literal interpretation of the Bible ) as " literalist "

  • On 3 October 2007 Lennox discussed with Richard Dawkins at the University of Alabama at Birmingham on the theses that Dawkins in his book The God Delusion (Eng. The God Delusion ) observes.
  • Further discussion with Dawkins was held at Trinity College ( Oxford) in April 2008.
  • On August 9, 2008 Lennox debated with Christopher Hitchens at the Edinburgh International Festival on the question whether Europe should bury his religious tradition and instead should open the new atheism, so the strict rejection of religion after the events of 9/11 suppose.
  • 23 August 2008 Lennox fought with Michael Shermer in the Wesley Conference Centre in Sydney about the existence of God.
  • On 21 October 2008 Lennox led by Richard Dawkins, a third discussion in the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, the scene of the evolution debate between Thomas Henry Huxley and Samuel Wilberforce of 1860. Private

Lennox speaks English, Russian, French and German. He is married to Sally Lennox, has three children and five grandchildren and lives in the countryside near Oxford.

His brother Gilbert Lennox was formerly Head of the Department of Modern Languages ​​at Ballyclare High School and is now an elder in the Church Glenabbey in Glengormley.
