John Schuyler Crosby

John Schuyler Crosby ( born September 19, 1839 in Albany, New York; † August 8, 1914 in Newport, Rhode Iceland ) was an American politician ( Republican). He was from 1883 to 1884, the eighth Governor of the Montana Territory.

Early years and military career

Little is known about Crosby's youth. With the start of the civil war he entered the public spotlight. On August 5, 1861, he appeared as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. By the end of the war he rose to the brevet lieutenant colonel. He served under several well-known generals of the Union Army and completed tricky missions behind enemy lines. President Abraham Lincoln personally thanked for his efforts. After the Civil War he was involved in several military operations in the West against the Indians. He was temporarily under the command of General Philip Sheridan and George Armstrong Custer. The end of 1870 retired from Crosby from military service and entered as a civilian in the public service.

Political career

In 1876, Crosby was appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant to the American Consul in Florence (Italy). This office he held until 1882. In 1882, President Chester A. Arthur appointed him as the new governor of the Montana Territory. He held between 15 January 1883 to the November 11, 1884 this office. After his resignation, he was Deputy U.S. Postmaster General during the last months of President Arthur's term of office. He made his last political office 1889-1892 as School Board ( School Commissioner) of the City of New York. After he retired from public life.
