John Stanley Plaskett

John Stanley Plaskett ( born November 17, 1865 in Oxford County at Woodstock ( Ontario ), Canada, † October 17, 1941 in Victoria) was a Canadian astronomer.

The original machine manufacturer began in 1889 a math and physics studies. In 1903 he began the Dominion Observatory to work in Ottawa. He became in 1918 director of the co-founders of and according to the plans he has set up the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory in Victoria.

Plaskett worked in the fields of scientific photography, Stellarspektroskopie and the determination of the radial velocities of spectroscopic binary stars. He compiled a catalog of over 500 radial velocities. In addition, he conducted research on the rotation of the galaxy.

In 1930 he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society.

His son was the astronomer Harry Hemley Plaskett ( 1893-1980 ).
