John Stuchell Fisher

John Stuchell Fisher ( born May 25, 1867 South Mahoning Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, † June 25, 1940 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania ) was an American politician ( Republican) and from 1927 to 1931 the 30th Governor of the State Pennsylvania.

Early years and political rise

John Fisher attended the Pennsylvania State Normal School. After that he was himself a teacher. After studying law, he was admitted to the bar in 1893 and commenced practice in his new profession.

Between 1901 and 1909 Fisher was a member of the Senate of Pennsylvania. After that, he was a member of a commission to revise the constitution of Pennsylvania. Between 1919 and 1922 he was commissioner of Banking ( Commissioner of Banking). In 1927 he was elected to succeed Gifford Pinchot as the new governor of his state.

Governor of Pennsylvania

John Fisher took up his new post on 18 January 1927. In his four-year tenure, he laid emphasis on a sound financial management. In the fight against electoral fraud ( voting machines ) were used in Pennsylvania voting machines. In Fisher's reign was established with the Department of Revenue a new ministry. Governor Fisher left the schools improve in the State. Both through improvements in the education system as well as with funds for construction and maintenance of school buildings The road development was continued and more forests have been reforested.

The last year of his term has already been overshadowed by the effects of the global economic crisis erupted in 1929. As everywhere in the United States, unemployment rose and there were bank failures. The crisis was gradually overcome only in the years after his term. Because of a constitutional provision, he was not allowed to run for its direct re-election in 1930. Therefore, he resigned from his post on 20 January 1931. Fishers was succeeded by his predecessor Gifford Pinchot.

After the end of his governorship Fisher was advisor to the law firm of his son. He was also a member of several boards of directors of schools and hospitals. John Fisher died in June 1940. Hapsie He was married to Miller, with whom he had two children.
