Jonas Galusha

Jonas Galusha (* February 11, 1753 in Norwich, Connecticut; † September 24, 1834 in Shaftsbury, Vermont ) was an American politician, lawyer and Governor of the U.S. state of Vermont.

Like many other later political leaders born in Vermont Connecticut, he moved to Vermont in 1775. During the Revolutionary War, he distinguished himself at the Battle of Bennington in 1777 from the military.

His close connection to the ruling elite was already evident by the fact that he married Mary Chittenden, daughter of Thomas Chittendens of Vermont was at that time beyond the boundaries of the state as the leading politicians. Galusha was an active member of the Baptist Church and worked in various administrative and judicial administration offices in the late 18th century. In 1808 he acted in the election of the U.S. president as an elector of Vermont, who supported the election of the Democratic Republican James Madison.

Already in the following year was chosen Galusha governor of his home state, where he was previously the incumbent Governor Isaac Tichenor behind. This office he held until 1813, first from to in turn was surpassed by his brother in law, the supporters of the Federalist Party Martin Chittenden, in the election. But already in 1815 succeeded Jonas Galusha with the electoral defeat of the younger Chittenden 's comeback into the governorship, which he now held until 1820.

Like most wealthy politicians of his era died Jonas Galusha in a relatively old age. Galusha wide with 81 years on September 24, 1834, was buried in his hometown.
