Thomas P. Salmon

Thomas Paul Salmon ( born August 19, 1932 in Cleveland, Ohio ) is a former American politician. He was from 1973 to 1977 Governor of the State of Vermont.

Early years and political rise

Thomas Salmon was born in Cleveland but grew up in Stow, Massachusetts on. He attended Hudson High School, also in Massachusetts, and eventually studied until 1954 at Boston College. At the law school he attended this school until 1957 a law degree. In 1958 he was still studying tax law at New York University.

Salmon was a member of the Democratic Party. After a move to Rockingham in Vermont, he was 1959-1972 City Council there. From 1963 to 1965 he was also a judge in Bellows Falls. Between 1965 and 1970 he was a delegate in the House of Representatives from Vermont. There he spent two years as majority leader of the then opposition Democrats.

Governor of Vermont and other CV

In 1972 Salmon was elected governor of his state. This office he held between 4 January 1973 to 6 January 1977. He was at times on the Board of Governor Association of New England states. In 1976 he applied unsuccessfully for a seat in the Senate of the United States. Between 1993 and 1998 he was president of the University of Vermont. He then practiced as a lawyer in Bellows Falls. In 1983, he became CEO of Green Mountain Power Company. Thomas Salmon is married to Madeleine Savaria, with whom he has four children. His son Thomas was elected in 2006 as Head of the Court (State Auditor ) of Vermont.
