Joncourt

Joncourt is a municipality with 321 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) 14 kilometers north of Saint- Quentin in the French department of Aisne in the Picardie region.

History

The region around Joncourt was part of the battlefield of the Hundred Days Offensive of the Allies during World War II in the fall of 1918. In September 1918, the attacks on the town of Saint -Quentin and Saint- Quentin Canal were in the area after the battle of Épehy executed, the the battle of the Canal de la Sambre à l' Oise east of Joncourt on 4 November 1918 prepared.

On 1 October 1918, the British officer and poet Wilfred Owen led a successful attack on German positions at Joncourt. Owen was awarded the Military Cross for his actions during this attack.
