Villeret (Aisne)

Villeret is a commune of 314 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Aisne in Picardy. It belongs to the district of Saint -Quentin, in the canton of Le Catelet and community association Pays du Vermandois.

Geography

The municipality is situated on the border of the Somme, about 13 kilometers northwest of Saint- Quentin.

History

The village was occupied during World War II by German troops. In the spring of 1917 these withdrew to the Hindenburg Line and destroyed the previously zwangsevakuierte village. The fate of the village during these years have been documented in literature by Ben Macintyre.
