Jonschwil

Jonschwil is a municipality in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland.

Geography

Jonschwil consists of the villages Jonschwil, Schwarzenbach, the hamlet Bettenau and a part of Oberrindal. Jonschwil on the Thur near Wil SG and Oberuzwil.

The highest point at around 800 m above sea level. M. is the wild mountain, from which one has a good view of Toggenburg, Churfirsten and Alpstein. For trips also invites the location between Oberuzwil and Jonschwil bed Weiher.

History

772 was first mentioned Bettenau ( Betinauvia ), 779 Schwarzenbach as Svarzinbah villa (later than Svarzanbach ), on 20 May 796 Jonschwil ( locust vilare ). 814 is a church called St. in Jonschwil. Martin have existed. To 840 is here probably the scholar and poet Notker Balbulus born. By 1200, the Schwarzenbach castle was created. This was sold in 1273 to Rudolf von Habsburg, 1483-1805 the castle belonged to the monastery of St. Gall, today it is privately owned. Approximately 1460 of the bed Weiher was created as an artificial pond in order to increase the fish population of the monastery of St. Gall between Bettenau and Oberuzwil. 1803, the villages merged to form community Jonschwil. In the 1880s Oberrindal was politically and ecclesiastically divided into three parts, so that the village Oberrindal now belongs partly to Oberuzwil, Lutisburg and Jonschwil. The separation runs along the streets.

Between 1893 and 1899 the writer Heinrich Federer was a Catholic priest and chaplain in Jonschwil.

On 31 December 2010 the community numbered 3,573 inhabitants.

Culture

Jonschwil had become in the 2000s with the venue Degenaupark to a " concert Village». For the first time the game was launched in 1996 at the foot of the mountain performed by the Jubilee Festival " 1200 years Jonschwil » a first open air. Then in 2003 came the " Talentair " - a mix of talent and open air. This event was held under the patronage of " SG2003 "; which the Jubliläumsjahr 200 years of St. Gallen.

In 2006 took place here OpenAir Tufertschwil with groups such as Status Quo, Jamiroquai, Tokio Hotel and DJ Bobo instead. The following year, the second edition took place, but was forced to declare bankruptcy, which ultimately meant the end of the open-air festivals in Jonschwil.

Under the new name Summer Days festival took another edition held in Jonschwil. With 16,000 visitors (8000 per festival ), the festival was not sold out. It played: Gary Moore, Jethro Tull, The Hooters, Florian Ast, Bootleg Beatles on Friday and Nena, Polo Hofer & the Schmetterband, Sunrise Avenue, plush, Bagatello, Starch, Frantic and the Tiger ensemble of St. Pauli on Saturday.

After the festival attracted the new organizer balance sheet and decided to carry out in 2008 a festival. Since 2009, the event takes place directly on Lake Constance in Arbon.

In August 2008, played here the American band Metallica in front of over 35,000 spectators the only concert of the Summer Vacation Tour on Swiss soil. As opening acts Mnemic from Denmark and Within Temptation played from the Netherlands. A curious result of this concert was that " Nothing else matters " in 1992 again rose to number 10 in the Swiss Singles Chart.

After an appearance with Die Toten Hosen in 2009 took place in 2010, the Sonisphere festival with 45,000 visitors instead. With Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax were four bands that have influenced the style of Thrash Metal, on the stage. After heavy rains that led to chaotic conditions during the festival, no open-air festivals were more performed.
