Degersheim SG

Degersheim is a municipality in the constituency Wil in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland.

Geography

Degersheim located on the southeast train line St. Gallen - Wattwil - Nesslau- Neu St. Johann. Degersheim is embedded in a hilly landscape.

The lowest point Degersheims located in Bubental 647 m above sea level. M. The highest point is at the top Degersheimer exclave Gampen 1061 m above sea level. M. The railway station is 798 m above sea level. M. The community area is 1448 hectares, including 793 hectares of meadows and fields, 509 ha of forest, 46 ha Street, paths or tracks, 25 ha building footprints and 5 ha of water bodies.

The municipality Degersheim the village Wolfertswil belongs to the monastery Magdenau. Above Wolfertswil the lowest- lying high moor to north of the Alps, the Rotmoos. The neighboring municipalities are Oberuzwil, Flawil, Herisau, Schwellbrunn, Necker and Lutisburg. The exclave upper Gampen borders Schwellbrunn and Necker.

Degersheim in summer is a starting point for hiking and cycling tours. For the winter, Degersheim has three ski lifts with floodlit pistes for night and cross-country skiing.

Population

Degersheim had 3'886 inhabitants in late 2008. Of these, 667 were foreigners, 41.25 % were Catholic and reformed 32.14 %.

History

837 Degersheim is mentioned as Tegerascai, Wolfertswil 838 as Wolfridenswilare. In the 13th century, the foundation stone was laid for the location in the triangle Degersheim - Flawil - Uzwil monastery Magdenau. The inhabitants of Degersheim belonged to the parish Oberglatt at Flawil and built in the 15th century a chapel. 1708 they broke away from upper Smooth and bought up in 1808 for 2897 guilders free.

The population was predominantly of livestock and the cultivation of grain. So in 1447 a mill mentioned. In the 17th century, the monastery Magdenau received the today still existing infrastructure. 1708 Protestant, was founded in 1763, the Catholic parish. Since about 1750, the cotton weaving has arrived in Degersheim.

1803 Degersheim was a municipality in the canton of St. Gallen. Since then Degersheim is also the official, official name. The original name Tegerschen however, is still in use today by the local population.

1804 Magdenau and Degersheim merged. 1818 a fire destroyed 40 houses, 15 barns and church. 200 people were left homeless. By 1860, experienced Degersheim thanks to the embroidery industry an economic boom. In this industry, up to 900 people were employed. 1910 Degersheim connection was to the railway network. After the embroidery industry had a crisis, the focus of Degersheim is since 1930, especially in the metal and woodworking. The company AS elevators company currently employs approximately 120 employees in Wolfertswil.

By 2002 Degersheim belonged to the district Untertoggenburg. As part of the administrative review under the new cantonal constitution, the community came in 2003 for the constituency of Wil.

Traffic

In Degersheim station stop in addition to the regional trains of the South Eastern Railway (SOB ) and the inter-regional trains of the pre-Alpine Express train (Roman Horn - Lucerne). A post bus line connects Degersheim about Wolfertswil and Magdenau with Flawil and ensures there to connect to the network of the SBB.
