José Joaquín de Olmedo

José Joaquín de Olmedo ( born March 20, 1780 in Guayaquil, † February 19, 1847 ) was an Ecuadorian lawyer, writer and politician.

Olmedo was the son of a Spaniard and a native Guayaquilenerin. His school he graduated in Quito and then studied at the University of Lima, philosophy and law. In 1805 he was able to successfully complete this study with a PhD. Following this, he was entrusted with a teaching position at the Department of Civil Law ( Colegio de San Carlos ).

With effect from February 1, 1808 Olmedo was admitted to the bar and appointed as such to the Real Audiencia de Quito. In 1811 he represented his native Guayaquil at the Cortes of Cadiz. When King Ferdinand VII took over the government of God, he dissolved the Cortes with immediate effect and Olmedo had to return as all other members home.

1820 Guayaquil declared itself independent as free province and Olmedo was its first president. As such, he represented his native country at the 1823 Peruvian Congress as a delegate. At the request of Simon Bolivar Olmedo represented 1825-1828 his country at the English court of William IV

As a fighter for the independence of Ecuador Olmedo Simon Bolivar did not occur at last Cabinet. After he initiated fall of President Juan José Flores in June 1845 was elected Olmedo with effect from 18 June to head a provisional government in Ecuador. This office as head of state he gave on December 8, 1845 the new President Vicente Ramón Roca again.

Four weeks before his 67th birthday died Olmedo on February 19, 1847 in Guayaquil and found his final resting place.

The new airport of Guayaquil is named in his honor.
