Joseph Cassidy (bishop)

Joseph Cassidy ( born October 29, 1933, Charlestown, County Mayo, † January 31, 2013 in Ballinasloe, County Galway) was Roman Catholic Archbishop of Tuam.

Life

Joseph Cassidy received on 21 June 1959, the ordination. He was from 1959 to 1977 teacher of English, Drama and English literature at Saint Joseph College ( Garbally College) in Ballinasloe, which he was Rector from 1977 to 1979.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on 24 August 1979 to the Coadjutor Bishop of Clonfert. The Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland, Gaetano Alibrandi, donated to him on 23 September of the same year, the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were Joseph Cunnane, Archbishop of Tuam, and Thomas Flynn, Bishop of Achonry.

Following the resignation of Thomas Ryan followed him on 1 May 1982 by the Bishop of Clonfert. On August 22, 1987, he was appointed Archbishop of Tuam. In the 1980s, he was spokesman for the Irish Bishops' Conference. His resignation was accepted June 28, 1994 by Pope John Paul II. He then worked as a pastor of Moore until 2009.
