Joseph Murphy (author)

Joseph Murphy ( born May 20, 1898 in Ireland, † December 15, 1981 in Laguna Hills, California ) was a well known author in the field of New Thought movement, philosopher and psychologist.

Life

Joseph Murphy was born in 1898 in Ireland and emigrated to the USA in 1922, where he studied law, philosophy and religious studies and received his doctoral degree. The mid-1940s he moved to Los Angeles, where he met Ernest Holmes, founder of Religious Science. In 1946 he was ordained by Holmes as Minister of Religious Science. Murphy was 28 years, the Executive Board of the Church of Divine Science in Los Angeles. In 1947 he was president of the 32nd Congress of the INTA (International New Thought Alliance). As an author, he was particularly known in the 1960s. His main work applies the power of your subconscious mind (1962). In 1976, he settled in Laguna Hills, California, where he died in 1981. He is now often called the " father of positive thinking ," but was in reality only an important representative.

Within the New Thought movement Joseph Murphy takes a special position, not only because he was the most popular author of the same, but as almost the only representative of the transmigration of souls, or reincarnation refused and took the view, after the death of the man or his mind was forever in another dimension.

Main message Murphys is it that a man can take using " scientific prayer " ( affirmations, auto-suggestions ) influence on his subconscious to direct the whole of life in a positive direction. To be considered here is that the term subconscious is taken completely different from Murphy as the unconscious of Freud. Many theories have been adopted by Coué, who are themselves rooted again in popular scientific theories of the 19th century.

Murphy was extremely cautious with biographical information about yourself.

Family

Joseph Murphy was born in a religious, Catholic family with many children. The father, who was 99 years old and in old age still taught French and Gaelic, was headmaster in the village of Derrynard in southern Ireland, where Joseph Murphy grew up.

Since the 1940s, Joseph Murphy was increasingly active in journalism, he has written numerous magazine articles and books ( 36 ), ( a daily radio and later television programs including ) turned into regular radio broadcasts to his audience.

Bestseller

His work " The Power of Your Subconscious Mind " has experienced 65 editions and is still a bestseller.

His message, however, is another: Not the subconscious mind has the power, but we have the power. We can consciously act on the unconscious. We know many aspects of this power: Self-fulfilling prophecies, creative dreams, autogenic training, " Positive Thinking " ...

In this series also Murphy moved with his auto-suggestions. He wants to convey with his work opportunities on the subconscious to influence, thereby to be calmer, happier and more successful.

Reception

Even today rely authors such as Vera Birkenbihl, Erhard F. Friday and others on Murphy. Meanwhile, based on the Bible thesis that faith can move mountains, is doubted by empiricist scientists, but asserted simultaneously by many devotees.

Criticism

As part of the scientific criticism of compulsively attached positive thinking is Joseph Murphy by Günter Sheikh in his book " Positive thinking makes you sick " fundamentally in its central tenets analyzed and empirically refuted. Sheikh Murphy dedicates an entire chapter. Main approach of criticism at the Sheikh is constructed by Murphy illusion of science. Murphy disseminated by Sheikh neat half-knowledge. Findings of natural science, religion, psychology, psychotherapy, medicine and Bilbelexegese are mixed randomly to a higher truth in Murphy. Murphy ignored the relevant research status of the individual subject areas. Some of his remarks and conclusions contradict the even. Murphy developed a kind of metaphysics and goes with it in an area that is no longer vulnerable to empiricism and factual arguments, but in which everything can be said.

In his book "Tele - Psi The power of your thoughts. . " he went to the opinion of Sheikh even in the field of parapsychology, superstition and black magic. Moreover, it is just after Sheikh Murphy, who turns back the achievements of modern psychology with a completely different definition of the Freudian concept of the subconscious mind again and occurs with Fussen.
