Joseph Peter O'Connell

Joseph Peter O'Connell ( born December 10, 1931 in Melbourne, † April 27, 2013 in Melbourne) was Auxiliary Bishop of Melbourne.

Life

Joseph O'Connell first began a teaching degree, but resigned in 1950 in the Corpus Christi College, Werribee, and studied philosophy and theology. The Koadjutorerzbischof of Melbourne, Justin Daniel Simonds, consecrated him on July 28, 1957 in St. Patrick's Cathedral priest of the Archdiocese of Melbourne. As an alumnus of the Australian Peter 's College in Rome in 1961, he completed doctoral studies in canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University. He served in various parishes in West Melbourne and Yarraville, also at the diocesan tribunal of the Archdiocese, where he was in 1968 appointed Vice prosecuted ex officio. In 1969 he was appointed diocesan vicar.

Pope Paul VI. appointed him on 24 January 1976 for the Auxiliary Bishop of Melbourne and Titular Bishop of Sanctus Germanus. The Archbishop of Melbourne Thomas Francis Little consecrated him bishop on 31 March 1976; Co-consecrators were Arthur Francis Fox, Bishop of Sale, and Ronald Austin Mulkearns, Bishop of Ballarat.
