Juan Fernández Martín

Juan Martín Fernández ( born January 5, 1957 in Alhama de Granada, Spain ) is a former Spanish cyclist.

Sports career

Martin grew up in Andalusia. At age eleven, he moved with his family to Vitoria in the Basque Country. He started cycling at the sports club Sociedad Ciclista Vitoriana. As a junior athlete, he went for the sports car club financial y Servicios until 1978. 1979 Martín received at the Belgian cycling team KAS Campagnolo his first professional contract and began his professional driver career with a victory in the one-day race Gran Premio Navarra. In 1980, he won the Spanish championship road and was third in the World Championship road drivers.

At the World Championships Martín was able to place 1980-1988 with the exception of 1983 every time. Third place for the best result he could repeat in 1987 and 1988. Even with the big stage race Vuelta a España, Giro d' Italia and Tour de France he took part several times. His best results were in the Vuelta 1980, the 16th, at the Giro in 1980 and the 24th in the Tour de France 1981, the 50th place. In the Vuelta, where he was also placed six times, he won four stages. After Martin had ended his career as a cyclist, he took over the post in 1988 as sports director at the Spanish cycling team CLAS Cajastur. Under his leadership, Tony Rominger, Fernando and Ángel Casero Escartín were successful cyclists.
