Work

Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre (on the cover of the LP Kwanza are mentioned as aliases also Kalaparusha Aharah Difda and Maurice McIntyre Benford ) grew up in Chicago and first learned clarinet and percussion, but then switched to saxophone. He studied at the Chicago College of Music and worked during the 1960s with musicians of the free and avant-garde jazz scene as Malachi Favors, Muhal Richard Abrams and Roscoe Mitchell. He was a member of the group Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians ( AACM ) in this period. His first album under his own name appeared in 1969. He also worked as a session musician for the label Delmark Records and worked on board projects by George Freeman, JB Hutto and Little Milton.

In the 1970s, McIntyre moved to New York City, played in Sam Rivers ' Rivbea Studios ( Wildflowers Loft Sessions, 1976) and taught in Karl Berger's Creative Music Studio. During this time, the recording of his, in the judgment of Richard Cook and Brian Morton probably best albums Forces and Blessings fall with bassist Fred Hopkins in 1970 and Peace and Blessings, which was released in 1979 on Black Saint.

With Muhal Richard Abrams, he toured in the 1970s several times through Europe. After his live album, which was created in 1981, McIntyre took only a few plates, also worked as a street musician, and in the subway stations of New York. Only in 1998 he resumed with Pheeroan akLaff and Michael Logan on ( Dream Of, on the CIMP label); the following year he played with his old colleagues in AACM days like Jarman, Favors, Steve Colson, Kahil El'Zabar ) on the album Bright Moments. In the 2000s reappeared a few of his albums as a leader, as the CIMP album Southeastern.

His playing on the saxophone reminiscent of the late John Coltrane (Cook / Morton ).
