Kamensk-Shakhtinsky

Kamensk- Schachtinski (Russian Каменск - Шахтинский ) is a city in Russia. It is located in the Federal District Southern Federal District Rostov Oblast in the Seversky Donets River at and has 95 296 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ). The distance to the regional capital Rostov-on- Don is 145 kilometers.

History

The present city was founded in 1671 as a Cossack settlement Kamenskaja, named after the running in the nearby River Kamenka. Due to frequent fires, the settlement over the next few centuries had to be moved several times, most recently in 1817, from the left to the right bank of the Donets. After the October Revolution Kamenskaja was initially some years part of the newly founded province Donetsk Ukrainian SSR; 1924 was the settlement in the course of administrative reform in the Russian SFSR. On March 28, 1927, the settlement was granted town status and two years later was renamed Kamensk- Schachtinski. The Schachtinski is derived from Schachta - mine, which is due to one of the nearby coal mines. From 1954 to 1957 Kamensk administrative center was named after her Oblast. After its dissolution, the city was incorporated into the Rostov Oblast.

2004, the settlements of urban type Lichowskoi (2002: 13 638 inhabitants) and Sawodskoi ( 8962 ) incorporated, so that the population of the city almost reached the 100,000 mark.

Economy and infrastructure

Kamensk- Schachtinski is in the Donets Basin, which is known as a major coal mining area. In the city itself there are several companies in the chemical industry, an engineering plant and several food manufacturers.

The city is located on the Russian highway M4, which runs from Moscow over 910 km away to Rostov in the Krasnodar region. In addition, there is a direct rail link with Rostov.
