Aksay, Rostov Oblast

Aksai (Russian Аксай ) is a city in the southern Russian Rostov Oblast and a satellite city of the regional center of Rostov -on-Don. It is the main town of the same name and has 41 969 inhabitants Rajons (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

Aksai located in the southeast of the East European Plain, on the right bank of the Don near the mouth of the river branch ortsnamensgebendem Aksai. The distance to the city center of Rostov-on- Don is 18 km in the south-west. Other nearby towns are Bataisk (17 km south-west of Aksai located on the opposite bank of the Don ) and Novocherkassk (24 km northeast).

History

Its history goes back to the second half of the 16th century, when Cossacks in 1569 founded the city. Initially Aksai was a military base in the southern border areas of Russia and had to repeatedly fend off attacks, including on the part of the Crimean Tatars. In the late 17th century it served in the campaigns of Peter the Great against the Crimean Tatars as sentinels of Novocherkassk, was the main base of the Donkosakenheeres. Even in the 19th century Aksai had military significance, as here, a line of defense was positioned in the Crimean War.

In the 1860s, the city was connected to the Russian railway network, which led to population growth. Ever since the local establishment was here used to farm because of the fertile soil and warm climate for Russian conditions.

Throughout its history, Aksai was known by various names: as Ust- Aksaiskaja ( Усть - Аксайская ) Nischnije Rasdory ( Нижние Раздоры ) Kobjakowski ( Кобяковский ) Atamanski ( Атаманский ) or Nizhny ( Нижний ). From 1791, the settlement was called Aksaiskaja ( Аксайская ). In 1957 she then received its present name and the city status.

Economy and Transport

Because of the proximity to the city of Rostov -on-Don, a large part of the population Aksaier works there. Own industrial enterprises exist in Aksai only a relatively small extent. These include a chemical factory, a glass factory, enterprises of the food industry, suppliers of agricultural engineering as well as a river shipyard.

The main transport links Aksais run over Rostov. A private port, the city to the remote highway M4 and a railway line of the North Caucasian railway. In addition, Aksai has a shipping pier at Don.
