Belaya Kalitva

Belaya Kalitwa (Russian Белая Калитва ) is a Russian city with 43,651 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the Rostov Oblast.

Geography

Belaya Kalitwa located on the eastern bank of the river Seversky Donets, at the mouth of the creek Kalitwa. The distance to the regional capital Rostov-on- Don is almost 170 km, the nearest town is 50km from the Belaya Kalitwa remote Kamensk- Schachtinski. The surrounding landscape is characterized by treeless steppe region of the Donets Basin.

History

The village was founded in 1703 as a Cossack Cossack village, which originally bore the name Ust- Belokalitwenskaja, which translates to " ( Cossack village on the ) mouth of the White Kalitwa " means. Here, the flow due to the chalky rocks on its banks was called white. Until the 20th century the site was mainly occupied by the Don Cossacks.

Economy and Transport

The most important industrial company in Belaya Kalitwa is the aluminum metallurgy factory BKMPO. Other industries are mechanical engineering, food industry and coal mining in the nearby eastern part of the Donets Basin.

Near the city runs the highway M21, which is the main road link for Belaya Kalitwa. There is also a mainline railway station, among other things to Rostov- on-Don.
