Karel Brückner

Karel Brückner ( born November 13, 1939 in Olomouc, Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia ) is a former Czech football player and coach.

Playing career

Bruckner began as a striker and an attacking midfielder at Sigma Olomouc. In 1965 he moved to Banik Ostrava, arrived there but only in the B- team in the second Czechoslovak league used. After just one season, the attacker went back to Olomouc, where in 1974 his playing career ended, and immediately joined the coaching job.

Coaching career

In the first year under Brückner the team rose from the fourth to the third league. Thanks to a reorganization of the Czechoslovak football Sigma Olomouc in 1977 was then already second-rate. Brückner moved in 1979 to Železárny Prostějov and led the team immediately from the third to the second division. There, the team immediately became fifth. The good results procured Brückner 1981, the first job in the top division. With Zbrojovka Brno he was 1981/82 Eleventh, the following season he had to go into the winter break, however.

He returned in the summer of 1983 to Olomouc. Sigma was on - but in the meantime descended into the first league again immediately. Brückner was given the task to realize the immediate resurgence, a project that succeeded in impressive fashion. In the season 1984/85 the Movers sixth, even a year later, was fourth, which the team qualified for the UEFA Cup - it was the biggest success so far of the club's history.

After four years, Brückner's methods did however worn. In the 1986/87 season the team finished only 14th place Brückner, who did not want to resign voluntarily, was fired by the club management. There followed three only one-year commitment. First, as coach of the Czechoslovak Under-21, 1988/89 at the then second division ZVL Žilina and 1989/90, again in the 1st league in TJ Vitkovice.

In the summer of 1990, Brückner returned for the second time in his coaching career at Sigma Olomouc back. He led the team to third place and again in the UEFA Cup. There failed the team in 1991/92 in the quarter finals to Real Madrid. In the league again followed the third place, and again take part in the UEFA Cup.

In September 1993, Brückner's third term in Olomouc to an end. In early 1994 he took over Petra Drnovice but had in October 1994, again taking his hat. In the second half of the 1994/95 season he coached the Slovakian first division club Inter Bratislava. Then Brückner hired again in Olomouc and led the team in 1995/96 to the Czech runner. The following season, however, was less successful. In the UEFA Cup still came in the qualifying round against Hutnik Kraków from the in the league the team finished only eighth.

In the summer of 1997 Bruckner joined the Czech Association for four years and oversaw the U21 national team. From 1998 he was also also assistant coach Jozef Chovanec of which he inherited in 2001 itself.

He was national coach, as the Czech team failed to qualify for the 2002 World Cup. Brückner missed since the Czech Republic with no major tournament ( Euro 2004 and Euro 2008 ) and led the team temporarily to 2nd place in the FIFA world rankings. Under him, the Czech Republic participated for the first time since the founding of the Czech Football Association at a World Cup tournament ( World Cup 2006). Despite the unexpected resignation in the preliminary round, Brückner Treaty of Czech Football Association was subsequently extended for a further two years to give him the opportunity to lead his team in qualifying for the 2008 European Football Championship. After leaving in the EM group stage it was announced that Brückner will no longer train the Czech team.

From summer 2008 to spring 2009, Brückner was team manager of the OFB Team, managed there, but only one win and two draws in four defeats.

After his involvement in the OFB team Brückner finished for health reasons his coaching career.

Karel Brückner's nickname is because of its appearance Klekih -petra ( "White Father", a character in a novel by Karl May ).
