Karen L. Nyberg

Karen Lujean Nyberg (born 7 October 1969 in Parkers Prairie, Minnesota, United States) is an American astronaut.

Career

Nyberg graduated in 1994 her mechanical engineering degree summa cum laude from the University of North Dakota from. Then she went to the University of Texas and conducted research at the human thermoregulatory and focused on the control of thermoregulation in spacesuits. So she completed her doctorate in 1998.

Astronauts activity

Nyberg was selected in July 2000 for the astronaut program at NASA. After two years of training, she qualified as a mission specialist.

NEEMO 10

In 2006 she took part in NEEMO 10, a deep-sea training and simulation exercise at the Aquarius underwater laboratory in part. Object of this mission was to prepare for future flights to the moon and Mars. It approaches were considered for movement and simulated with weighted backpacks the attraction of the moon or Mars. In addition, communication techniques, and the use and navigation of remote-controlled robots on the moon's surface were examined.

STS -124

Nyberg was assigned on 21 March 2007, the STS- 124 mission specialist as. The launch took place on 31 May 2008, the return on 14 June 2008. Nyberg was there eight days as a visitor to the International Space Station.

STS -132

Nyberg was nominated for the Shuttle flight STS -132, but was taken on 11 August 2009 from unexplained medical reasons from the team and replaced by Michael Good. NASA stressed that we are dealing with a temporary affliction that Nyberg in a technical role to accompany the flight, and that further flight allocations for them would be possible.

ISS Expeditions 36/37

Nyberg was the ISS Expeditions 36 and 37 assigned in February 2011 as a flight engineer. As of May 29, 2013, it worked on board the International Space Station. The return to Earth on 11 November 2013.

Private

Nyberg is married in second marriage with the astronauts Douglas Hurley and has a son.
