Karlsruhe Palace

The Karlsruhe Palace was built in 1715 in the style of baroque as the residence of the Margrave Karl Wilhelm of Baden- Durlach. It served until 1918 as a residential castle of the Marquis and Grand Dukes of Baden. Today in the building the Badische Landesmuseum and part of the Federal Constitutional Court is housed.

History

Architect of the original building was Jakob Friedrich von chunk village. The first building was partially constructed of wood and had to be thoroughly renovated in 1746 already, the wooden structures were replaced by a new building in stone. The castle consisted of two floors and attic on the top floor, to the Corps de Logis is long wing joined. The seven-story tower (51 m high ) north of the corps de logis was originally released and was only connected by open wooden galleries with the main building.

With the beginning of the reign of Karl Friedrich, the castle was rebuilt after repeatedly revised plans by Balthasar Neumann by the former Hofjunker Friedrich von Kesslau to 1770. The most striking external features of this reform were the larger windows and doors and the two pavilions between the central section and the side wings of the facility. In 1785 the castle tower learned by Wilhelm Jeremias Müller shortening and received a domed roof.

In the wake of the March Revolution Grand Duke Leopold in 1849 was temporarily expelled from the castle. The final end of the use of the castle as a family residence was sealed with the abdication of the last Baden monarch Frederick II in 1918. Since 1919, the building serves as Baden State Museum.

During the Second World War, the Karlsruhe Palace burned down by bomb attacks in September 1944. Between 1955 and 1966 it was rebuilt as a museum. Only the outer facade was restored to its original. Inside modern exhibit space created.

Castle Garden

Situated on the northern side of the castle, for Hardt forest castle garden was created 1731-1746 by Christian Thran in the French Baroque style.
