Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici

Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici ( born July 17, 1933, Cospicua ) is a Maltese politician and former prime minister.

Biography

After studying law and becoming a Doctor of Law from 1968 he worked as a lecturer in Business and Tax Law at the University of Malta as well as the legal advisor to the Federation of Trade Unions.

1980 " Karmenu " Mifsud Bonnici was elected Deputy Chairman of the Maltese Malta Labour Party (MLP ), and determines the designated successor of the former President and Prime Minister Dom Mintoff.

Due to the resignation of a government minister, he was co-opted on May 2, 1982 in the Parliament. In addition, he was first Minister of Labour and Social Services and Deputy on September 5, 1983 Premier and Minister of Education.

On 22 December 1984 he became the successor of Mintoff Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party. During his reign Mifsud Bonnici maintained the stance of his predecessor. In particular, he maintained the unyielding attitude towards the opposition Nationalist Party. On the other hand, he canvassed for private commercial and industrial sites, trying to improve the Maltese relations with Western Europe, the USA and the British Commonwealth. At the same time he stopped at Malta's strong relations with communist states and even reinforced relations with Libya.

1987, the Labour Party lost the general election against the Nationalist Party, so that Mifsud Bonnici was replaced May 12, 1987 by Edward Fenech Adami as Prime Minister.

Mifsud Bonnici was replaced in 1992 as chairman of the Labour Party and opposition leaders by Alfred Sant. In 1996 he was a candidate then not again for a seat in Parliament.
