The Kayin State, also known as Karen State, is one of the 14 administrative units of Myanmar. It is named after the people of the Karen ( Kayin ).

Geography

The Kayin State is located in the east of Myanmar. It is bordered on the north by the Mandalay Division and to the west by the Bago Division and Mon State. In the northeast it borders on the Kayah State, and in the east it forms the border with Thailand and borders on the provinces of Kanchanaburi, Tak and Mae Hong Son, the capital of Kayin State Pa-an.

Population

The majority of the population represents the Karen people that has inhabited 2,700 years ago from Mongolia coming over Tibet, following the river Salween, the territory of today's Kayin State. Other Karen groups followed the Mekong and the Irrawaddy. Many Karen in Myanmar today set up outside the Karen State, especially in the Yangon Division and the Tanintharyi Division, but also in Mon State.

History

The Kayin State is the location of the longest-running conflict until today Nationality of the earth. Since independence in 1948, Myanmar's Karen National Union ( KNU ) is fighting for an independent country by the name of Kawthoolei. The Burmese military government, also called State Peace and Development Council, invested in the past, very little in the public infrastructure such as schools, clinics, and hospitals. The majority of the population sees the KNU are actually legitimate government of Kayin State. The central government is trying resettlements to break the resistance in the mountainous state. Also, there were conflicts between Christian and Buddhist Karen ( Democratic Karen Buddhist Army). Since 2006, through a reinforced offensive of the army against the KNU, in the course of which destroyed hundreds of villages and tens of thousands of civilians were displaced.

Many people from the Kayin State living in refugee camps on the Thai border provinces of Kanchanaburi, Mae Hong Son, and especially in Mae Sot. Hundreds of thousands hiding in the jungle before accessing the Burmese army.
