Kazanlak

Kazanlak [ kɐzɐnɫɤk ] ( Bulgarian Казанлък ) is a city in Bulgaria. It is the center of a municipality and is located in the Rosental ( Bulg Розова долина ) north of Stara Zagora between the Balkan Mountains and the mountain ridge Sredna Gora. The city has 51,995 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2004), and industrial center of the machine tools and textile industries, the production of musical instruments, as well as the city of roses and rose oil products.

History and Significance

Kazanlak was founded around 1300 AD to secure the nearby Shipka military strategy and is now the largest town in the Rose Valley. In the Russo- Turkish War (1877-1878) it was a major theater of war. Kazanlak was known earlier because of its rose oil production. In Kazanlak is the only institute of the Balkan peninsula for the cultivation of plants for the production of essential oils.

Culture and sights

The cultural center of Kazanlak is the Tschitalischte Founded in 1873, " Iskra " with library, theater and cinema hall and a museum, consisting of more than 40,000 exhibits.

Not far from the town is the famous Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak of. In the unique monument a respected, especially unknown Thracian prince was buried probably in the 4th century BC.

The tomb consists of an entrance hall, a corridor and the covered dome of the grave chamber. The paintings on the walls are of exceptional beauty. The tomb is under the protection of UNESCO and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

To the north, a road branches off to the Shipka. There is a Rose Museum and a large memorial church in honor of the Russian -Turkish War (1877-1878) died for Bulgaria's liberation Russian soldiers and Bulgarian Landwehr men.

About 5 km west of the city lies the ancient city Seuthopolis.
