Kennedy (TTC)

Kennedy is a subway station in Toronto. It is the terminus of the Bloor- Danforth line and the Scarborough RT, the Toronto Subway, which lead in opposite directions. The station is located at the Eglinton Avenue near the intersection with Kennedy Avenue. Every day it is used by an average of 104 360 passengers (2009 /10), making it the fourth most frequented station of the subway network.

Station

The station consists of four superimposed levels. At the bottom there is the underground station of the Bloor- Danforth Line with a central platform, this follows the distribution level. The bus on the ground floor offers interchanges to ten bus routes. In an elevated position the stop of the Scarborough RT is found with two side platforms. Around the station are the commuters four park-and -rides with a total of 1138 paid parking and a kiss- and-ride facility available. About 100 meters to the east, connected to the distribution level by a pedestrian tunnel, is the Kennedy station on the Stouffville Line of GO Transit.

Immediately after leaving the station the route of the Scarborough RT describes a tight left turn and passes via a ramp to the surface, to then follow to the north of the route of the Canadian National Railway.

History

The opening of the station took place on 22 November 1980 when the Bloor- Danforth line reached from the previous terminus Warden from Kennedy. The then independent town of Scarborough called for a further extension to the city center, which the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC ) rejected for cost reasons. Instead, they suggested the construction of a crossing-free Tramway. The TTC was persuaded to use on the track towards McCowan rather than trams automatically train service with linear motors, whereupon the route had to be retooled.

On 22 March 1985, the Scarborough RT was finally opened. The new transport was characterized by numerous breakdowns and massive cost overruns. In the summer of 1988, the track was closed for three months. During this time, originally built for the tram turning loop needed to be rebuilt because there several times trains were derailed. Since the loop is only used for parking. In terms of a solution, a Spanish platform for boarding and the other is used for disembarking.

Train Station GO Transit has been operating since June 2, 2005. The integration of the suburban railway drew a comprehensive renovation of the entire station complex by itself and involved the construction of access facilities and a new ticket hall.

Projects

Medium term, the importance of the station will continue to increase. As part of the road project City Transit a light rail line will be built along Eglinton Avenue. That person, the Eglinton Crosstown LRT line will be 33 km long in its final form and connect Kennedy with the Toronto airport. In the central portion of the Eglinton subway stations and Eglinton West ( intersection points with the Yonge- University - Spadina Line) underground route is planned. In addition to operating on the route of the Scarborough RT in future low-floor light rail vehicles. The planned light rail route Scarborough Malvern LRT is to lead on McCowan addition to the Malvern neighborhood.
