Course

The Khilok entfließt the some 50 kilometers (direct distance ) north-west of Chita located in 965 m height Arachlei Lake. The 58.5 km ² lake is situated on the watershed between the basins of the Yenisei and the Lena: it drains through the Khilok the Yenisei, over a stream in a northeasterly direction to the Vitim and thus the Lena. The Khilok flows on the territory of the Trans-Baikal region through a wide valley in west south-westerly direction parallel to the south of the river located Jablonowygebirge. He reached the Autonomous Republic of Buryatia and turns about 100 kilometers above its mouth sharply to the north. Finally, it flows about 70 kilometers southwest of the Republic capital of Ulan -Ude in 522 m altitude in the Selenga River, the largest tributary of Lake Baikal.

In the entire course of the river forms across broad segments of meander and sometimes many kilometers away from each other arms. The most important tributary is the Ungo from the left. The river name is derived from the Evenk word for kilka grindstone.

Hydrographic
