Khilok, Zabaykalsky Krai

Khilok (Russian Хилок ) is a city in the region, Transbaikalia (Russia) with 11,539 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city lies between Zagan - Churtei comb and Jablonowygebirge, about 260 km west of the regional capital of Chita, the river Khilok, a right tributary of the Selenga.

The city is the administrative center of the Khilok Rajons same name.

Khilok is station of the Trans-Siberian Railway ( Route 5934 km from Moscow). Through the city performs the highway M55 Irkutsk - Chita.

History

Khilok was created in 1895 during the construction of the Trans-Baikal section of the Trans-Siberian Railway and developed after its opening in 1900 as the station settlement. Named the place was after the river (of Evenki kilka for grinding stone). 1951 Khilok received city rights.

Culture and sights

At the village Gyrschelun (15 km to the east, railway station ) was unearthed a Paleolithic settlement.

Economy

In Khilok as the center of an agricultural area, there are companies in the food industry, along with timber and railway workshops.
