Kindu

Province

Kindu is the capital of Maniema province in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Situated at an altitude of 500 meters above sea level on the Congo River city has about 200,000 inhabitants. The city is located 400 km west of Bukavu, has a railway connection to the cities Kalemie, and Kamina Kananga and an airfield with a 2,200 -meter-long airstrip.

In the 19th century the city was an important center of gold, ivory and slave trade. Arabic - Swahili -born slave traders had their base here in 1860, and sent from here to Zanzibar caravans.

Kindu Kindu is the seat of the diocese.
