Kirk Maltby

Kirk Maltby ( born December 22, 1972 in Guelph, Ontario ) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player who was active during his playing career for the Edmonton Oilers and the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League.

Career

Kirk Maltby began his career in 1989 in the Canadian Junior Football League OHL with the Owen Sound Platers. In the NHL Entry Draft in 1992, he was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the third round at position 65. His first pro season, he played then in 1992/93 in the AHL with the Cape Breton Oilers, a farm team of the Edmonton Oilers.

In the fall of 1993, he was then on the NHL roster the Oilers and remained two and a half years with the team. In March 1996 he was transferred to the Detroit Red Wings. There he was for many years the " Grind Line" by Darren McCarty and Kris Draper. In his first full season in Detroit, he was able to celebrate with the team winning the Stanley Cup in 1997. The following year, they were able to repeat the success.

Due to his hard style of play, he suffered frequent injury and was able to complete the full 82 games a season until the 2001/ 02 season. In the playoffs, 2002, the Red Wings were the third time in six years the Stanley Cup win. The following years were largely injury-free and 2002/ 03 had Maltby his best season with 37 points scorer.

The points yields went in the next few years indeed significantly back, but next to Kris Draper and Daniel Cleary he is an important part in the Checking Line of the Red Wings.

In May 2007, the Detroit Red Wings Maltbys extended by three years. Maltby was Nicklas Lidstrom and Kris Draper after the Red Wing, who was senior active in the season 2009/10.

In October 2010, the offensive player declared his active career to be over and now works as a scout for the Detroit Red Wings.
