Kleines Festspielhaus

The House of Mozart is one of the venues of the Salzburg Festival in Salzburg's old town. It was from 1925, the first festival hall of the festival, the name of the House for Mozart carries it since 2006. Here operas and concerts are mainly organized.

The first projects

Initial plans for the construction of the Festspielhaus on Monk's Mountain in Salzburg by the Viennese architects Hermann Helmer and Ferdinand Fellner J. did not get beyond the planning stage.

The Berlin architect Hans Poelzig created the plans for a festival theater in the park of the castle Hellbrunn that is not it past, however, about the groundbreaking ceremony - Richard Strauss led from the symbolic three hammer blows, but should follow no other stone more.

Eduard Hütter

Through the conversion of the former stables to a mystery stage under the direction of the Salzburger Land Conservator Eduard Hütter the first Salzburg Festival Hall, which was opened in 1925 with Hugo von Hofmannsthal's The Salzburg Great World Theatre, directed by Max Reinhardt was born.

Clemens Holzmeister

Immediately after the first season, the Festspielhaus was first rebuilt under the direction of Clement Wood Master and stood as temporary quarters for the everyman available. The first performance in the converted Festspielhaus was Carlo Gozzi's play Turandot in the processing and translation of Karl Gustav Vollmoeller and directed by Max Reinhardt in the summer of 1926.

The first opera was Fidelio by Ludwig van Beethoven, conducted by Franz Schalk, to the Clemens Holzmeister designed the stage sets.

In 1936, another reconstruction followed again under Clement Wood Master and intensive consultation by the conductor Arturo Toscanini, who, in turn Fidelio also launched the first opera performance.

Benno von Arent

After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich in 1938 the frescoes Anton Faistauer, the mosaics Anton Kolig and the sculptures Jacob Adlharts were considered degenerate art, Clemens Wood Master was no longer politically opportune, and then the next conversion followed under the direction of the " Reich stage designer " Benno von Arent. The first performance was Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss, conducted by Karl Böhm in 1939.

Hans Hofmann and Erich Engels

After the end of World War II was initially to a further conversion not to think first of the new Festspielhaus (today: Clemens Wood Master, opening in 1960 Grosses Festspielhaus, architect again ) was built, followed by which has now become old Festspielhaus of Salzburg architect Hans Hofmann and Erich Engels rebuilt again in 1963 and re-opened with Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro under Lorin Maazel.

The Small Festival Hall was little loved, and so there were some early plans for a new rebuild. After Clemens Wood Master had in 1970 designed the auditorium of the Rock Riding School new, he laid in 1978, before such plans, which he later again revised, so that should be allows simultaneous playing of the Rock Riding School and the Kleines Festspielhaus - but these plans were, despite the intercession of Herbert von Karajan never executed.

Wilhelm Bauer wood and François Valentiny

For Mozart Year 2006, the former royal stables for the last time being, now the sixth time by the architect Wilhelm Bauer Wood, a student of Clement Wood Master, and the Luxembourg François Valentiny were converted to the House for Mozart. The design of the three entrance portals, the artist took Josef Zenzmaier, with the design and manufacture of the Golden Wall in the foyer of the German artist Michael Hammers was entrusted. At the opening ceremony was again Le Nozze di Figaro, this time under the direction of Nikolaus Harnoncourt listed.

In the House for Mozart today find 1,580 people space, there are 1,495 seats and standing room for 85.

Trivia

The facade of the house was used as Edel Hotel Nouveau Rothschild in the U.S. action film Knight and Day with Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise.
