Knipperlé

Knipperlé is a white grape variety in the French region of Alsace ( Alsace → ( wine region ) ). Before the phylloxera - disaster at the end of the 19th century it was there yet widely used, since it was highly touted by Rebzüchter Johann Michael Ortlieb from the community Riquewihr from 1756. The variety is almost entirely disappeared, as it is very susceptible to the raw rot. They therefore provides only very fluctuating yields.

The high-yielding varieties provides simple white wines with low acidity. In the waste they therefore often served to break the acid peaks of other varieties of Alsace wine region. Although it is still officially authorized in the appellation, no new vines longer be created.

Origin

Due to genetic studies of 352 varieties in 1998 it turned out that the varieties Aligoté, Aubin Vert, Auxerrois, Bachet noir, Beaunoir, Chardonnay, Dameron, Franc Noir de la Haute Saône, Gamay Blanc Gloriod, Gamay, Melon de Bourgogne, Peurion, Romorantin, Roublot and Sacy also similar to the Knipperlé all originated from spontaneous crosses between Pinot Blanc and Gouais. Since the genetic differences between Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir are extremely low, there is a precise specification of the Pinot - type not yet available.

The success of these spontaneous crossing is explained that the two parent varieties are fundamentally different, genetically speaking. While the varieties of Pinot family believed to originate from Burgundy, the Gouais Blanc was brought by the Romans to France. In the Rebgärten of Burgundy and the southern Champagne both varieties were for some centuries in the Joint sentence.

Ethnicity: Pinot Blanc x Gouais
