Kohlhiesels Töchter (1920 film)

Kohlhiesels daughters is a German comedy film directed by Ernst Lubitsch from the year 1920. Silent film with Henny Porten in a double role based on the eponymous peasant farce.

Action

The film is set in the Bavarian Alps. The village host Mathias Kohlhiesel has two daughters that he wants to marry both. For the pretty Gretel should not be difficult as this, the ugly and prickly Liesel, however, is likely very difficult to find a husband. Therefore, Father Mathias allowed only one marriage of Gretel when Liesel is under the hood. The two boys, Peter and Paul are both in love with Gretel. Peter is a go-getter, while Paul is very shy. But the intelligent Peter Paul convinced them that after a wedding with the ugly Liesel could readily be followed by a divorce. This paved the way for Peter would be free again for a relationship with Gretel. So Peter marries Liesel. But Liesel turns out to be very pleasant spouse. Carefully she dedicates herself to her husband, but he only replied with this rudeness to be divorced quickly. Liesel is initially disappointed by the married life and decides to convert. From the once ugly Liesel is an equally attractive woman like her sister Gretel developed. With the change Liesel is ultimately for loving husband Peter. On Divorce is no longer to think. Thus, the way is clear for Paul and he may marry his beloved Gretel.

Background

The peasant farce about two very different sisters is based on William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. The buildings of this produced by the Messter -Film GmbH for the UFA film come from Jack Winter, costumes by Hans Baluschek. The shooting took place in Grainau in Garmisch -Partenkirchen and the Ufa studio in Berlin- Tempelhof in January / February 1920. The world premiere of the film was on March 9, 1920 at the Ufa - Palast am Zoo in Berlin. It was commercially successful and was Lubitsch's most popular film comedy in Germany.

History has seen numerous remakes.

Reviews

The critic Herbert Ihering 1920 was of the view that filmed at the grace and wit on stage unbearably sweet and playful peasant comedy win, and moved his praise expressly to the Porten, the representations made to it was rather averse else.
