Koinadugu District
Koinadugu is a district of Sierra Leone with about 266,000 inhabitants. It is located in the province of Northern in the north of the country, on the border with Guinea. Its capital city is Kabala. The district is divided into 11 chiefdoms ( chiefdoms ).
Koinadugu covers an area of 12,121 km ², making it the largest area, while the least densely populated district in Sierra Leone. The Bintumani ( Loma Mansa ), which belongs to the Loma Mountains, is the highest mountain in the country. In Koinadugu is also the Sonfon Lake.
The residents of Koinadugu mainly belong to the ethnic groups of the Limba, Kuranko and Jalonke and are mostly Muslims. The economy of the Koinadugu District consists in gold and diamond mining, cattle farming and palm oil production ..
The district decreed in 2006 over 43 health facilities, including a state hospital. 2005 3 % of the population were HIV - positive, which is the nation's highest rate. 2004/2005 there were 234 primary and eight secondary schools. The literacy rate is 21% (30 % for men and 14% for women) nationwide at the lowest, as is the proportion of children attending school ( 31.2 %).
