Region

Kouré is a rural municipality in the department of co-location in Niger.

Geography

Kouré located in the large landscape Sudan in their transition to the Sahel and is located south of the Niger capital Niamey on the River Niger. The neighboring municipalities are Kourés Hamdallaye in the north, Dantchandou in the northeast, Harikanassou in the east, in the southeast N'Gonga, Fakara in the south, and Kirtachi Say in the southwest, Kollo in the west and N'Dounga in the northwest. The municipality is divided into 26 administrative villages and 24 hamlets. The main town of the country church is the administrative village Kouré.

In Kouré it shows the last wild population of West African giraffe, which was the mid-1990s the verge of extinction. The tiger bush offers the giraffes in the rocky highlands enough food. In the dry season they move due to water shortage in neighboring regions, such as after Harikanassou.

History

The traditional seat of power (French: chefferie ) the Zarma Kouré was created in the mid-17th century. The rural community Kouré was founded in 2002 at a nationwide administrative reform from the Canton Kouré forth. In 2008, 27 homes destroyed by flooding in the administrative village Boula Koaratégui and damaged more than 300 villagers. 2009 tried flooding in three other villages in the municipality of property damage, of which a total back around 300 residents were directly affected.

Population

99% of the population belong to the ethnic group of the Zarma. There are also minorities of Fulani and Tuareg. At the 2001 census Kouré had 29 481 inhabitants. For the year 2010 41.181 inhabitants were calculated.

Economy and infrastructure

About 90 % of the population live on agriculture. Crops are cowpea, Erderbsen, peanuts, millet and sorghum. The agropastoralistische form of economy is on the rise. There are four weekly markets in the town: in the main town Kouré as well as in the villages Boula, Karoubédji and Kokoaré. Among the most important traded goods there are millet, cowpeas, peanuts, small ruminants and poultry. The West African Giraffes are the main attraction for ecotourism efforts. Kouré is located on the National Road 1, which here is part of the international highway Dakar - N'Djamena -highway.
