Kourfeye Centre (also: Kourfey Centre) is a rural municipality in the Department of Filingue in Niger.

Geography

Kourfeye Centre is located in the Sahel region at Dallol Bosso. The neighboring municipalities are Abala and Sanam in the north, and Bagaroua Tébaram in the east, Dogonkiria, Loga and Soucoucoutane in the south and Filingue, Imanan and Tondikandia in the West. The municipality is divided into 41 administrative villages, eleven traditional villages and 47 hamlets. The main town of the country church is Chikal consisting of the administrative villages Chikal Dirgouma, Chikal Illela, Chikal Koré, Chikal Lokoko and Chikal Soloa.

History

Kourfeye Centre is named after the Kourfey, a subgroup of the Hausa, which closed at the end of the 18th century in the area. The Kourfey previously lived in villages north of Tahoua, but they may have had to retire due to poor climatic conditions due to constant threats by the Tuareg as well. During the 19th century, the first independent Kourfey lived in new villages and mingled with the people of longer-term residents. In the 20th century the villages in the canton Kourfey were combined, the south-eastern part forms the rural community Kourfeye Centre since a nationwide administrative reform in 2002.

Population

At the 2001 census Kourfeye Centre had 44 290 inhabitants. For the year 2010 58.617 inhabitants were calculated.
