Lääne County
The Lääne ( maakond Estonian Lääne or Läänemaa, "West Country ", German Wiek or Wieck ) is a county ( maakond ) in Estonia.
Geography
Läänemaa includes the westernmost part of the Estonian mainland, the islands Vormsi ( German Worms) and Osmussaare and numerous smaller islands and islets. The topography is very flat. The region is dominated by grazing and agriculture.
Policy
The county government ( maakonnavalitsus ) is headed by a governor ( maavanem ), who is appointed by the Government of Estonia for five years.
Cities and Towns
The committee is composed of the two cities (Estonian linn ) Haapsalu ( German Hapsal ) and Lihula ( Leal ) and eleven rural communities ( vallad ) together.
