Las Aves archipelago

Las Aves (Spanish Archipelago Las Aves) is located in the east an uninhabited group of islands in the Caribbean Sea, north of the coast of Venezuela between the islands of Bonaire in the West and Los Roques. Administratively, the islands belong to the Dependencias Federales ( Federal Territories ).

Las Aves is two atoll -like coral reef complexes containing approximately 8 km in diameter:

  • Aves de Barlovento (at 11 ° 59 'N, 67 ° 27' W11.983333333333 - 67.45 ), is the eastern coral reef and consists of two islands and two Cays.
  • Aves de Sotavento (with 12 ° 0 ' N, 67 ° 40' W12 67.666666666667 ), is the western reef and consists of four islands and cays three.

All islands together have a land area of only 3.35 km ².

At the coral reef Aves de Barlovento a French fleet was sunk in 1678 under the command of Admiral Jean d' Estrées II.

The Venezuelan Navy maintains Aves de Sotavento on a side Coast Guard Station (La Estación de Secundaria Guardacostas ) named Isla Aves de Sotavento, which is the main station downstream of Puerto Cabello.
