Latorica Protected Landscape Area

The protected landscape area Latorica (Slovak Chranena krajinná oblasť Latorica ) is a nature reserve in south-eastern Slovakia. It is in the political district of Košice kraj ( Okresy Michalovce and Trebišov ) and is adjacent to protected areas Dunajské luhy and Zahorie one of only three long-range lowland protected areas in Slovakia.

The seat of government is located in Trebišov.

Geography

The conservation area is located mainly in the East Slovak Lowland, Hills with a smaller portion in the mountains Zemplínske. It is named after the river Latorica who comes from Ukraine and forms the " main axis " of the nature reserve. The Latorica takes on the eastern Slovak rivers like Laborec and Ondava, so that ultimately creates the river Bodrog. The reserve follows him to the Slovak-Hungarian border. In addition to the main rivers backwaters of the affected rivers and riparian forests, artificially constructed canals and surrounding wetlands are included in the PLA Latorica. Some surveys put the little wind-blown sand dunes dar. Since 2004, the protected area also includes part of the mountain Zemplínske Hills, which lies within the famous Tokaj wine region.

The lowest point in Slovakia Streda nad Bodrogom with 94.3 m nm located on the reserve.

Flora and Fauna

A 44.05 km ² large area of the nature reserve is under the number 606 of the Ramsar protected areas.

In the area of the nature reserve are rare aquatic and wetland habitats that have no equivalent counterpart in Slovakia, located. The flora is varied, from the damp -loving species to xerotherm. Among the most important species include: waterfalls, Kleefarn, Cirsium brachycephalum ( genus thistles ), Lying falsepimpernel, Hungarian Nude Stem - Iris (Iris aphylla subsp hungarica. ), Greater Pasque and Hungarian meadow anemone (Pulsatilla pratensis subsp hungarica. ). Rarer species are eg white water lily, yellow pond lily, crab claw, water chestnut and Beckmannia eruciformis ( subfamily Pooideae ). In addition to the riparian forests here are numerous regularly flooded meadows, for the scattered groups of shrubs are characteristic. However, they also individual trees to find such as pastures.

The location of the protected landscape area on a migration path, a larger number of water birds, both for a short stay as well as for the permanent nesting. Some important bird species are: purple herons, egrets, eagles, black storks, black kite and night herons. Other representatives of the animal world include Ordinary nose cricket, European Mantis, Large Copper and Big Oak Bock from the insects, bitterling, Caucasian dog fish and zingel from the fish. Significant is the presence of the European pond turtle, which has also become the symbol of the Protected Landscape Area.
