Le Reposoir

Le Reposoir is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Le Reposoir is located on 982 m above sea level. M., southwest of Cluses, about 37 km southeast of the city of Geneva (air line). The mountain village is located in a valley at the confluence of the Grand and the Petit Foron Foron, in the northern Bornes Alps (part of the Savoy Alps ) between the peaks of the Chaîne du Bargy and the Chaîne des Aravis, in Faucigny.

The area of ​​37.36 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the Bornes Alps. The main settlement area is the basin of Le Reposoir, in which the two mountain streams Grand Foron ( from the west ) and Petit Foron confluence (from the south ) and as Foron you Reposoir to the northeast by a deep valley flow to the Arve. The valley is surrounded by densely wooded slopes; above approximately 1800 m above sea level. M. are extensive Alpine meadows. Neighboring communities of Le Reposoir are Mont- Saxonnex, Marnaz and Scionzier in the north, Nancy- sur -Cluses, Magland and Sallanches in the east and Grand -Bornand in the south.

History

The story of Le Reposoir began in 1151 when Jean d' Espagne, a monk of the Carthusian Order, in this remote valley founded a Carthusian monastery. In the following years the valley was reclaimed and in the vicinity of the monastery was a settlement. The monastery has long been an important pilgrimage and was restored in the 17th century. During the French Revolution it was sacked. However, the last monks were forced to leave the monastery until 1901. After that, the buildings were converted into a hotel. After another renovation work lives since 1932, a Carmelite community in the Chartreuse du Reposoir.

Attractions

The most important attraction is the Chartreuse du Reposoir. The convent building and the large cloister date from the 17th century, the small cloister from the 15th century. Also in the 15th century was the abbey church with medieval frescoes its present form; It was renovated in the 20th century.

The parish church of Saint -Jean -Baptiste in the village of Le Reposoir was built in the 19th century. On the Col de la Colombière is the chapel of Notre Dame de l' Assomption, which was built in 1955.

Population

With 504 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Le Reposoir is one of the small towns in the Haute-Savoie region. During the 20th century, the population steadily increased due to high levels of emigration from (1901 were still 417 residents counted in Le Reposoir ). Since the mid- 1970s, however, a significant increase in population was recorded again.

Economy and infrastructure

Le Reposoir was until well into the 20th century a predominantly marked by one country and alpine farming village. Today there are various operations of small businesses. Here, the type of cheese Reblochon is made. In recent decades, Le Reposoir has developed into a resort and thus receive a significant economic upturn. The community is specialized in both the summer tourism as well as on winter tourism ( mountain railways and ski lifts).

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a secondary road ( Routes des Grandes Alpes), which runs from Cluses on the Col de la Colombière to Saint -Jean -de -Sixt in the center of the Bornes Massif. The nearest links to the A40 motorway is located at a distance of around 12 km.
