Marnaz

Marnaz is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Marnaz located at about 500 m, about halfway between Bonneville and Cluses, 33 km southeast of the city of Geneva (air line). The village is located on the southern edge of the broad Arvetals, in the Savoy Alps at the northern foot of the Chaîne du Bargy (part of the Bornes Alps ), in Faucigny.

The area of ​​9.02 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the middle Arvetals. The northern boundary runs in the area of the flood plain of the Arve, which here flows in a wide Talniederung from east to west. From the flood plain, the municipality's area extends southward over the flood plain and the alluvial fan of the village of Bach's Marnaz. In a narrow strip of communal land on the steep forested slope to the lake Lac Bénit and on the craggy limestone peaks of the Chaîne du Bargy enough. History

The territory of Marnaz was already inhabited in Roman times. For the first time the place in the 12th century is mentioned. The name is derived from the French word marne ( marl ). In the Middle Ages Marnaz belonged to the rule Faucigny. As part of the Dauphiné reached the place in 1349 in France, but was made ​​in the Treaty of Paris ( 1355 ) in a country Abtausch to the Counts of Savoy. Then Marnaz shared the fate of Savoy.
