Vougy (Haute-Savoie)

Vougy is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Vougy located at about 465 m above sea level. M., halfway between Bonneville and Cluses, about 30 km southeast of the city of Geneva (air line). The village is located on the southern edge of the broad Arvetals in the mouth of the Giffre in the Arve, in the Savoy Alps at the northern foot of the heights of Mont- Saxonnex, in Faucigny.

The area of ​​3.99 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the middle Arvetals. The northern boundary runs along the Arve, which here flows in a wide Talniederung from east to west. From the river, the municipality's area extends southward over the flat alluvial plain up to the adjacent, densely wooded escarpment. Below Mont- Saxonnex is approximately 800 m above sea level. M. reached the highest elevation of Vougy.

Neighboring communities of Vougy are Ayse, Marignier and Thyez in the north, Marnaz in the east, Mont- Saxonnex in the south and Bonneville in the West.

History

Vougy is first mentioned in the early 15th century. The origin of the place name is uncertain; some sources derive the name from the Gallic word uoceton (under the Forest), others from the Roman personal name Valgius from. The politically independent community Vougy was only formed in 1803 from parts of the parish of Saint- Hippolyte.

Population

With 1487 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Vougy one of the smaller towns in the Haute-Savoie region. In recent decades, a striking population growth was recorded. Outside the old town center created numerous single and multi- family home neighborhoods and commercial zones.

Economy and infrastructure

Vougy was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by farming village. Today there are numerous companies of small and medium enterprises.
